ITS R&D Projects

Objective:

To develop a new model of an automated weigh station for commercial vehicles that can operate attended or unattended at any time during the day as required.

  • TC/Saskatchewan now partnering to deploy systems in remote areas.
  • A spin-off was the R&D project to test Virtual Weigh Stations in an urban environment in the city of Saskatoon

Seasonal Load Restrictions

Objective:

To develop systems to determine load-bearing capacity of a road in various weather conditions

  • was initially started at the conceptual level
  • Partners: IBI Group/Manitoba/University of Waterloo
  • now being continued through a bilateral agreement with the province of New Brunswick to test some of the concepts.

511 Readiness in Canada

Objective:

To prepare a development plan and deployment guidelines for implementing a national traveller and weather information systems

  • 511C: a national coalition involving all provinces and territories, TC, EC and associations.
  • CRTC allocated “511”
  • Work now to build a national weather and traveller information system.

Doing More with Less

  • $30 Million under the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program
  • $19M committed to date, leverages $32M in partner funding
