Hankin Road Upgrades and Water Main Replacement Complete

Project replaces over 1 kilometre of eroded water lines, constructs safer intersection

Telkwa, British Columbia, December 16, 2009 – Residents of Telkwa will benefit from the completion of the redesign of the intersection at Hankin Road and Highway 16, and the upgrade of aging water, storm water and wastewater facilities. Together, the projects received a combined $1.66 million in federal and provincial funding.  Dick Harris, the Member of Parliament for Cariboo—Prince George and John Rustad, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Nechako Lakes, joined Carman Graf, Mayor of Telkwa, in celebrating the completion of the project earlier today.

“Improvements to Telkwa highways and water distribution system are just another example of how our Government delivers for B.C.,” said MP Harris. “Through our Economic Action Plan, we remain focused on investing in infrastructure that will stimulate the economy, create jobs, and benefit the health and well-being of all Canadians.”

“This is a great example of not just shared funding, but using some innovative technology in updating old infrastructure,” said MLA Rustad. “The community will benefit from these improvements going forward.”

“These projects will make some much needed improvements to make our roads safer for pedestrians and traffic and improve our utilities”, said Mayor Carman Graf. “We are very appreciative of the support provided by the federal and provincial governments to improve health and safety in our community.”

The Hankin Road improvements combined the replacement of water, wastewater and storm water main lines with the redesign of the intersection to improve traffic safety, including the construction of a pedestrian underpass. The Hankin Road project prepared the way for the installation of a new water main along Highway 16.

The Highway 16 water main replacement used innovative pipe-bursting technology, which is more cost-efficient, less disruptive to traffic, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions in comparison with conventional open trench construction.
