Federal Gas Tax Funds received for Hacienda road

Malahide Township, Ontario, September 25, 2006 - Joe Preston, MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and John Wilson, Mayor of the Township of Malahide are pleased to announce that the Township of Malahide will use $171,769 in federal gas tax funding towards rebuilding and resurfacing of the Hacienda Road.

This federal gas tax money will help finance the use of recycled cold mix technology. This new technology, which uses over 60 per cent less energy than the conventional hot mix asphalt materials, will extend the lifespan of the road by at least 10 years.

"I am pleased to see federal gas tax funding at work here in the Township of Malahide being used to resurface and re-profile Hacienda Road using environmentally friendly technology," said MP Joe Preston. "This contribution shows that Canada's new government is helping to get things done for Ontario's rural communities."

Mayor Wilson expressed his gratitude for funding from the federal government for projects such as this. "Funds received from any upper levels of government are always appreciated as there are always projects waiting to be funded."

In 2005, the Government of Canada signed an agreement with the Province of Ontario, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the City of Toronto to provide over $1.8 billion in federal gas tax funding, over five years, to cities and communities across Ontario. Under the Gas Tax Funding Agreement, the Township of Malahide will receive $715,618 over 5 years.
